Artisan v5

releases5 min read

It’s time for a refreshing update! Before we introduce Artisan v5, let’s first express our gratitude to those who made this release possible.

Sponsors

Sivetz

Michael Barthmus, the mastermind behind the revival of the Sivetz brand, took over the legacy of Michael Sivetz. In 2020, he reached out to the artisan team, expressing his desire to connect their machines. We added support for their full range of machines in v2.8.2, which they supported as machine sponsor. Today, they are back and driving the development of our v5 release as Release Sponsor. Thank you Michael for your ongoing support!

Machine Sponsors

This Roaster Scope version features two machine sponsors.

Dutch Master Roasters

A project born out of passion evolved into the Dutch Master Roasters company, renowned for its creation of premium coffee roasting machines that are compact in size yet offer extensive control.

We collaborated with the engineers at Dutch Master Roasters to teach Roaster Scope how to control their machines in both manual and automatic modes, ensuring seamless integration.

Coffee Crafters

Jason Scott, a long-time contributor and supporter of the artisan project, recently took over the business of Coffee Crafters to create Hermetheus Coffee Crafters and now supports us as a machine sponsor.

Hermetheus Coffee Crafters offers small roasters for newcomers to the industry. These machines stand out for their straightforward installation process. Of course, they can be conveniently controlled from Roaster Scope using his ingenious Co-Pilot device.

Donations

The artisan community is rapidly expanding, not only in terms of downloads but also in terms of supporters. We are delighted to welcome the following first-time sponsors. Notably, a significant number of them hail from producing countries such as Brazil, Guatemala, Peru, Venezuela, and Vietnam.

Theodore Tedijanto, Jason Melvin, Danford Sy, Uriah Bishop, Paul Bates, Gary Kramer, Brandon Myers, Josiana of Idcoffeelab, Michael Hendrix, Mark Proud, Brooks Stanfield, John Miller, jimbenard, Zach Hyatt, StandardSix, Miguel Angel Herrera, Jonathan White, webrewmemory, John Dolzadelli, Melissa Panganiban, High Flight Coffee, Tamir Ellis, arabicarobusta, Richard McCormack, Avia Levin, Logan Schmidt, Ariel Werner Linares, Ellen Abernethy, Andres Simon, Freytes, Rud233, Augustinus IJzereef, 高橋敬二, Matthew Watkins, odeursdecafe, Liza Smith, Johnnie T Shirley, Adam Kushins, adbacilaaux-cell, Jose Carhuaricra Mayta, Biota Coffee, William Buschu, Phillip Ferrante-Roseberry, and Keith Adler.

Software requires constant maintenance to ensure its smooth operation. Recently, the latest operating system updates by Apple caused random crashes of Roaster Scope v4.2 due to a bundled component which relied on a, now outdated, API.

Therefore, Roaster Scope thrives on sponsorship, particularly through recurring donations. We are particularly grateful to the following individuals and companies who have consistently supported us across different versions.

JP Salvat, Doug Leblanc, Donald Burnham, Nik Hawks, 内山洋, Malcolm Ennis, bodhi-pi, Cecil of Rainshadow Coffee Roasting Company, David Degan, Todd Harrell, Jordan Berg, Doug Francisco, Wilson Wong, John Ewing, Crozatman, Alessandro of Caffè Distratto, Lou, Covabrelli Coffee, Charles Guill, Lou Arminio, Nguyen Tung, Valentin & Boris of KAFFEEMODUL, Jarrod Coronado, Mark Kelley, Evette Eickelmann, Kent Simmons, JoyUs Productions, and John Eickhoff.

If you’re interested in supporting the artisan project, consider making a donation. For an even more fulfilling experience, consider subscribing to our platform!

What is new?

The artisan universe is changing quite a bit these days. The artisan home is moving from artisan-scope.org to artisan.tools which integrates the Roaster Scope downloads, our refreshed platform, updated documentation and our new shop, all in one place.

Face

Roaster Scope v5 boasts a more user-friendly interface with rounded buttons, a variety of lovely icons, enhanced tooltips, and refreshed widget styles. Additionally, we’ve improved the theming mechanism and introduced new themes, including the Catppuccin family and Chalkboard.

Dashboard

The most significant visual change, however, is the introduction of a dashboard that greets you upon startup. This dashboard enables you to swiftly input the primary roast properties directly within the main window. Drag-and-drop an image on it to dress it up!

Machine Support

Roaster Scope v5 adds support for all machines of Dutch Master Roasters as well as the newly released FreshRoast SR900. This version improves the support of machines from Sivetz, Orbiter, IMF, Schuilenburg, Santoker and the RoastSee NEXT device from Lebrew. Scope also learned how to read CSV files exported from the Aillio platform as well as RPATH files exported from the RoastPath platform.

License

Recent advancements in artificial intelligence technology have negatively impacted open-source projects in various ways. Also the artisan project has been subjected to persistent attacks. To address these challenges, we implemented initial countermeasures in the previous release by integrating with a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). In this release, we have further strengthened the project’s intellectual property protection by updating its license terms from GPLv3 to AGPLv3.

Free and open does not come without ownership!
