Open-source color meter

We built our own custom color meter. Find out why, how, and what you can do with it.
While our open-source desktop roasting software, artisan can measure and log temperatures during coffee roasting, all the available options for classifying the resulting roast color are prohibitively expensive and otherwise out of reach for small roasters. So we set out to build a tool for this specific use case. And as always we put our open-source ethos to work.
In 2014 we launched the first version of Tonino, our roast color meter. That model, fully open-source including the hardware, was a radical experiment in low-cost open technology which quite a few still own to this day. It was effectively an aluminum can with some sensors and an microcontroller fitted into in a 3D printed housing.
While we’re proud of the original Tonino, it was clearly not fully realized. So, in 2016, following feedback from users and taking advantage of improvements in available hardware, we redesigned Tonino with a bright OLED display, wireless connectivity, and wireless charging.
While this new hardware was not as radically open, it still aligns with our ethos, running an open-source microcontroller, connecting to our open-source software, and minimizing environmental impact through material choices. For example, the wireless charging base and color calibration set are made using an innovative material from Germany called Kraftplex.
This fully organic material is made from 100% cellulose, derived from sustainably cultivated stocks of softwood, using only water, pressure and heat. No chemical additives, bleaches or binding agents are used in its production. We then use a precision laser-cutting process by which we can put together all parts of our base without using any glue or additional screws.
The resulting product is less expensive than competing products, open and repairable, and offers high-quality data outputs that you can use to improve your roasting processes.
