Raise to Wake

There is no power switch. Lift Tonino off its base and the display wakes, ready to read. Set it back down and it sleeps. That is the whole interaction, and it is the same two moves whether you are cupping a sample or checking the last batch of the day.

Tonino lifted off its charging base, the display waking as it comes up
Scanning

Scanning

Tonino lights the surface of the tamped sample with four full-spectrum white LEDs and reads the reflected light across 64 channels, covering a surface area of about 5.3 cm². Because the sample is tamped rather than simply leveled, the reading depends far less on the grind. A measurement takes two seconds, with no preheat.

Three steps: tamp the sample, lift Tonino above it, and read 95, medium, from the display
Target Mode

Target Mode

Set a target value and the display judges every reading against it. Hit the target and the number turns green; darker readings show red and lighter ones show blue, so the answer is legible from across the room.

Calibrating

Calibrating

The base carries two reference tiles. Set Tonino down across them and it calibrates itself against known colors, which is what keeps readings comparable between units and stable over the years. The display reports the result, so you always know where the device stands.

Set Tonino on the two reference tiles on its base, and the display reports the calibration
Charging

Charging

The base takes power over micro USB, and Tonino charges wirelessly whenever it is set down. The display shows the charge state while it tops up. A full charge is good for around twelve hours of measuring and takes about four hours to put back.

Plug the base in, set Tonino on it, and the display shows the charge state
Tonino Scale

Tonino Scale

The scale runs from 50 to 130, with higher numbers meaning a lighter roast.

50 – 6020 – 30Extremely Dark

* The Agtron values above come from a cubic approximation (R² = 0.999) of 13 samples at two particle size distributions, each with 2 x 4 replicates, giving more than 1000 readings taken with four Toninos against a reference device reporting on the Agtron Gourmet scale. Take them with a grain of salt. Understanding Roast Color
